Classroom Management
The most important part of your daily work is developing effective classroom management strategies - manage your students well and your day will be less stressful, the school will be thankful and you will be rewarded with much more work as a result.
Teaching expectations in the classroom
- Follow the program left by the teacher you are replacing as closely as possible.
- If there is no work, ensure your lessons are appropriate for the age group and ability level. Other teachers of the same year level can help identify appropriate work.
- Always leave a briefing of the days event including activities and behaviour.
- Be attentive at all times in the classroom. It is not acceptable to read a novel or the newspaper while students are working.
Classroom Management Strategies:
- Have each day’s program planned out before students arrive. It is a good idea to have several activities that you are familiar with in case you need them.
- Understand classroom procedures before schools starts.
- Make sure all students are settled and listening before you start addressing them.
- Instruct students in a clear and concise manner. Explain who you are and why you are there.
- Give clear expectations I.E. listening to instructions, no talking while you are talking and hands up.
- Mark the role at the start of the day and after lunch.
- Run any other errands; lunch orders, notes to the office.
- Start with activities that need little explanation or discussion, this way students understand what they have to do and it gets them working quickly.
- Address bad behaviour promptly using the classroom procedures outlined.
- Try to solve classroom issues yourself; if you quickly refer situations on to senior teachers, you will loose authority among the students.
- If you find yourself in a situation with a student, colleague or parent that cannot be resolved, then seek the help of a senior teacher.
- Avoid confrontation and arguments with students
Maintaining professionalism does not mean you shouldn’t enjoy your day. Socialise with staff members during lunch and try to have fun with students throughout the day.
